The three basic types of air compressors are
Reciprocating
Reciprocating air compressors are positive displacement engines, which means that they increase air pressure by reducing their volume. This means they take a consecutive limited volume of air in a confined space and lift this air to a higher pressure. A reciprocating air compressor completes this with the piston in the cylinder as the compression and displacement element.
Rotary screw
Air Screw Compressor is a positive displacement compressor. The most common air compressor screw is a single spiral screw or lobe oil which is flooded with an air screw compressor. This compressor consists of two rotors in a casing where the rotor compresses air internally. There is no valve. These units are basically oil cooled (with air coolers or water cooled oil coolers) where the oil seals the internal distance.
Rotary Centrifugal
Centrifugal air compressors are dynamic compressors that depend on the transfer of energy from the rotating impeller to the air. Centrifugal compressors produce high pressure discharge by changing the angular momentum provided by a rotating impeller (dynamic displacement). To do this efficiently, the centrifugal compressor rotates at a higher speed than other types of compressors. This type of compressor is also designed for higher capacity because of the continuous flow through the compressor.
